GPS Lesson Plan
Region 10 CFEST at UNT and Advanced Technology Center,
Denton
Independent School District.
Performance Objective:
Upon completion of this lesson the student will be able to transfer
"Waypoints" from the Garmin etrex to a PC Computer, link the screen data
to a 3D World Map and view the traveled area previously marked by "
Waypoints".
The student will do the following:
Specific Objectives:
-Objective 1 - download a free Google 3D World Map
-Objective 2 - download a free GPS TrackMaker
-Objective 3 - import data from an etrex GPS unit to GPS TrackMaker
-Objective 4 - view the collected data on a 3D Google World Map
-Objective 5 - add information to data points

TrackMaker which will import data from an etrex Garmin GPS Unit.
Instructional Aids: PowerPoint Presentation , etrex
Garmin GPS unit with PC attachment, Google Earth 3D free program, GPS
TrackMaker free program.
Materials Needed: Classroom computers and jump
drives.
Equipment Needed: 1. Overhead projector 2. Projector
tied to computer for demonstration.
Guided Practice (LSI Quadrant III):
Learning Style - Visual, auditory, kinesthetic.
1.The instructor demonstrates each principle using the overhead
projector.
1.1 Download the freeware GPS TrackMaker
1.2 Attach the etrex Garmin unit to your computer using the attached
cord.
1.3 On the GPS TrackMaker > Interface > Garmin >Product ID > Routs >
Waypoints
It downloads on close of the box.
1.4 Down load Google Earth.
1.5 From GPS TrackMaker click on the circle of earth.
1.6 The earth will expand to cover the "WayPoints". The student sees
a photograph map of where he has traveled.
2. The instructor will assess progress during the classroom activity
and encourage, guide, inform and instruct as necessary.
Independent Practice (LSI Quadrant III):
Learning Style - field dependent, logical, kinesthetic
Students will use individual computers to follow the work assignment
as posted.
Review (LSI Quadrants I and IV):
Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III):
Students will use individual computers to follow the work assignment
as posted. The Instructor will assess progress during the classroom
activity and encourage, guide, inform and instruct as necessary.
Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV):
Learning Style - visual, auditory, field
dependent, logical
Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV):
Students completing the work can assist other students on an
individual basis.
